Carpet beetles are tiny, round beetles, but it is their larvae that cause the damage. The small, hairy larvae feed on wool carpets, rugs, woollen clothing, felt, feathers and even pet hair, leaving bare patches and small holes. Many people first notice them as small brown shed skins on windowsills or in the bottom of cupboards.
Adult beetles fly in during spring and lay eggs in dark, undisturbed spots. The larvae then hide under furniture, along carpet edges, inside wardrobes and in the roof space, where dust, lint and dead insects give them food.
